Helping India meet its energy needs while minimizing the impact on the environment is a big challenge. We protect biodiversity in ecologically sensitive areas like Mundra (in Gujarat) where we have conserved and extended mangrove forests.

We were the first power company in India to use ‘supercritical’ technology to reduce CO2 emissions, an initiative that won us the Clean Development Certification from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

In addition, we operate one of the largest solar power projects in India. We are at the forefront when it comes to improving efficiency and reducing waste. Below are the major environment related initiatives undertaken by the group companies:

Mangrove Conservations and Afforestation

Afforestation: 2885+ Ha; Survival Rate: 85%

Conservation: 1254 Ha

Mangrove afforestation has been undertaken at various locations across the Gujarat coast.

The Horticulture Department at Adani works in close association with the Gujarat Institute of Desert Ecology (GUIDE), Bhuj (Gujarat), and Gujarat Ecology Commission (GEC) and Saline Area Vitalization Enterprise Ltd.(SAVE) have assisted, coordinated and implemented the entire afforestation activity from inception to completion from June 2006 to March 2017.

Tree Plantation

Trees: 2.4+ Million (1470+ Ha)

Shrubs: 9.655+ Million

Green Carpet: 1.384+ Million sq. mtr

Survival Rate: 90-95%

The group has successfully planted millions of trees and shrubs with a success ration of over 90% across our locations in India. This includes plantation in highly arid and saline environments using treated STP water in irrigation, and treated sludge into manure.

Tree Transplantation

No. of trees transplanted: 5500+

Adani has been the first business enterprise in coal mining industry to deploy a tree transplanting machine in India. The machine transplants the trees in the mining area and hence helps conserve the local ecology.

Regeneration of Shorea Robusta (Sal) plant at in-house Nursery

Shorea Robusta (Sal) regeneration is unique feature at our in-house nursery located in our mining operations at Chattisgarh, India. Usually, these trees regenerate on their own in forest, however, our in-house team of horticulture experts have managed to regenerate these in our nursery too. The Process of Sal regeneration encompasses entire process from flower collection to seeding to hardening and then Sapling preparations, resulting to a healthy Sal tree.

This project has especially been appreciated and recognized by local environment bodies, owing to its value addition for conservation of native species.

Zero Waste

Aiming to build a waste neutral enterprise, all the waste is appropriately classified and sent for recovery/recycling or to ancillary industry for co-processing. During the year 2016-17, our Mundra (Gujarat) location alone handled 304 MT of hazardous and 268 MT of non-hazardous waste.

Water Recycling

Water treatment plant capacity: 5.92+ MLD

The group operates various water treatment plants for both, domestic and effluent water, with a capacity of 5.92+ MLD at Mundra, Gujarat and Sarguja, Chattisgarh. The treated water is used for horticulture purpose. Besides, 100% of the water used in mine washery is recycled.

Waste to Vermicompost

Produced: 40 MT

Across major locations, all the organic waste such as kitchen waste, agriculture waste, etc. are used to create soil enriching vermicomposting. This also includes use of industry byproducts like Flyash, that has shown innovative results such as reduced levels of contaminants and higher nutrition that allows one to enrich soil without the use of artificial fertilizers.
